“Adulting” 101: Essential Life Skills for Young People
Understanding “Adulting”
The term “adulting,” popularized by Millennials, encompasses the everyday tasks and responsibilities that come with being an adult. While the specifics may vary, there are some key areas where kids can start building skills:
Everyday Essentials: From budgeting and cooking a meal, to managing personal health appointments.
Financial Savvy: Learning about budgeting, taxes, and credit.
Career Navigation: Finding jobs, preparing for interviews, and understanding workplace dynamics.
Soft Skills: Building positive relationships, managing emotions, and finding balance.
Equipping Youth with Real-World Skills
So, how can kids in our communities start earning their “adulting” badge?
1. Get Involved in the Community: Encourage your kids to volunteer or join local groups where they can engage with diverse people and take on responsibilities. Whether it’s participating in community theater or helping with a local charity, these experiences are invaluable.
2. Pursue Internships and Job Shadowing: These opportunities offer a glimpse into various careers and provide practical experience. Kids can learn a lot from just observing professionals in their fields of interest.
3. Find a Boys & Girls Club: Our Clubs offer after-school and summer programs that focus on mentorship, academic support, and essential life skills. We’re here to bridge the gap between school and home, helping youth get ready for the real world.
5 Essential Life Skills for Youth
1. Self-Advocacy: Being able to speak up for oneself is crucial. This includes asking for help, expressing ideas, and setting boundaries. Programs like our Youth of the Year initiative help young people develop these skills and build leadership qualities.
2. Financial Management: Understanding how to handle money is one of the first major hurdles. Our Club Cha-Ching program offers elementary Members character-driven financial education activities that motivate and empower them on the basics of financial literacy through money manipulatives, games, and role playing.
3. Finding a Mentor: A good mentor offers guidance, support, and valuable connections. Kids and teens can benefit greatly from having someone to help navigate the transition from school to adulthood.
4. Daily Routines: From doing laundry to meal prep, learning these tasks at home can be a great way to build independence. It’s not just about performing these tasks but understanding their importance.
5. Job Search and Career Moves: Skills like crafting a resume, acing an interview, and keeping a job are essential. Our Summer Jobs Program provides hands-on experience to help teens get ahead in their careers.
