Meet Josie & Max

Josie, 1st Grade Member

Josie is a first grader Member who hasn't been very interested in school this year. Our Distance Learning Team would notice her camera off for class Zoom calls. Josie would often intentionally work on the wrong assignments and check out of school whenever she could. As a result, she often finished her work late, if at all. Distance Learning was not going well for her.

Concerned, her Learning Coordinator spent one day sitting at Josie’s desk. It became clear why Josie was doing everything she could to not participate. Josie was struggling to keep up with the new concepts via video. A quick number line taped to her desk and daily in person practice at the Club has made all the difference for Josie! Check out this video to see the progress Josie made this week. She had this light bulb moment and turned in all her work for the first time this year!

Max, 3rd Grade Member

Max recently enrolled at our Biella Club in Santa Rosa. When he arrived, he had a significant amount of school work to catch up on. Max is bright & eager to learn. Our Learning Coordinators couldn't figure out how he got so behind. Then one day, we found out Max was homeless.

He'd previously spent most of his days riding with his mom for her delivery job because he wasn't able to stay at the shelter by himself. He couldn’t go to school from the car and had just stopped trying.

However, because of generous community support, we were able to give Max a home at the Club for the rest of the school year! Now, he is so grateful to participate fully in his classes. He completes all his work every day and we’ve helped him finish all the work he missed with going to work with his mom. He now bounces into the Club every day and looks forward to school! We are so happy to have him in our Club!
