OUR IMPACT

We build competence.

Two Members enrolled in the Club were failing their classes. A teacher noticed the Club's impact right away. She wrote:

“ I wanted to thank you and your staff for all of your hard work with Lupita & Jasmyn. I am working on report cards and I wanted you to know how big of an impact you all have. Here are their Points Earned comparisons before and after joining Boys & Girls Club.

- Lupita went from 14% to 87% since joining.
- Jasmyn went from 27% to 86% since joining.

Please let your staff know how much I appreciate them!”

We build usefulness.

Diego was once a child in need of a positive environment after school in Roseland. Here is what he says about the impact the Club had on his future.

Luckily I was able to attend Sheppard Elementary Club and then the RAMS Club. These clubs allowed me to have the opportunity to build a better future for myself.

As a former foster care youth, ward of the court, and low income Roseland community member the odds of a greater future were against me. Boys & Girls Club has provided me with the skills, support, and comfort I needed to discover my full potential. Easy to say I would not be here without the Roseland Clubs I grew up in.

Once I was a former struggling adolescent with almost no hope. Now I get to run a Club to help kids like me. I cannot thank Boys & Girls Clubs enough for what they have taught me over the years.

We build belonging.

Jason was still adjusting to life with his aunt after his parents passed away.

Jason's aunt, who was also adjusting to her new role, was struggling to make ends meet and overwhelmed by the cost of quality childcare.

Thankfully, after a conversation with a caring staff member at the Club, Jason was enrolled with a full scholarship to attend daily! At the Club, he met a ton of new friends and started to build new happy memories .

We asked Jason about his favorite Club Memory. The no hands watermelon challenge! During the challenge Jason laughed so hard he let out a snort prompting all his friends to start snorting too. Although he didn't win the challenge it was the most he had laughed in long time!

We build influence.

Frankie, a young member who is quick to anger & react, was really upset recently by something in the classroom.

Normally he destroys his schoolwork, throws books, or worse. Frankie has experienced trauma many times and we know he learned these coping mechanisms.

At the Club, we’ve been working on emotional awareness and mindfulness. This includes bulletin boards with each Members’ name & emotional zone. The board also lists some strategies for self-care & wellness in each feeling zone.

When Frankie got angry, he walked up to the board and moved his name to the red zone (upset, mad, frustrated, etc.). Instead of being destructive, he took deep breathes, slowed down, closed his eyes, and then moved his name back to the yellow zone (happy, calm, ready to learn)!

Excitedly, he explained to staff how he influenced his emotions, calming down without being violent.
